Sir Tony Blair has thrown his support behind TWIN, a digital trade solution powered by distributed ledger technology (DLT) and developed by IOTA in collaboration with its partners, highlighting its potential to enhance trade across Africa.
Blair emphasizes that IOTA’s advanced technology can effectively “replace outdated, paper-based processes with secure, digital alternatives using distributed ledger technology (DLT).” Over the past few years, IOTA has evolved significantly, expanding from a network focused solely on the Internet of Things (IoT) to a dynamic ecosystem that influences numerous industries. One of its primary objectives has been to revolutionize global trade, providing solutions that enhance transparency, speed, and efficiency within the sector. This initiative has garnered recognition from some of the world’s most influential figures, with Sir Tony Blair being the latest to lend his endorsement.
Blair has publicly supported the TWIN digital trade platform, which IOTA launched in partnership with organizations such as the Global Alliance for Trade Facilitation and the Chartered Institute of Export & International Trade.

TWIN, or Trade Worldwide Information Network, represents an advancement of the Trade and Logistics Information Pipeline (TLIP), a long-standing initiative by IOTA aimed at enhancing cross-border trade, beginning with Kenya. As we recently reported, IOTA founder Dominik Schiener hinted at forthcoming exciting decentralized applications (dApps) aimed at tokenizing real-world assets across Africa and Asia.
In response to the endorsement, Dominik expressed that it serves as “a true testament to what we have built and the impact it will have on the world.” TWIN is specifically designed for emerging markets, which is why its initial implementation took place in Kenya. The platform enables these nations to efficiently navigate compliance and regulatory requirements throughout their value and supply chains. This ultimately leads to reduced costs and increased exports, contributing to economic growth and enhanced living standards.
Dominik further noted:
“With TWIN, we are creating new connections globally, lowering barriers, and eliminating friction to facilitate more efficient trading and asset exchange. This is one of the most significant projects to date where governments are employing public Blockchain-based solutions in real-world applications, all built on IOTA.”
In his enthusiastic endorsement shared through a blog post, Blair characterized TWIN as “an innovative digital infrastructure capable of streamlining trade within and across Africa’s borders.”
Sir Tony Blair, a former UK politician, served as Prime Minister from 1997 to 2007 and is recognized as the second-longest-serving Prime Minister in post-war Britain after Margaret Thatcher. Since his departure from office, he has become a prominent advocate for change and development through the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change.
Blair believes that TWIN empowers African nations to establish a “faster, cheaper, and simpler” trading system that can fully realize the potential of the African Continental Free Trade Area, which seeks to eliminate trade barriers among African countries.
He further stated:
“TWIN will modernize trade by replacing outdated, paper-based processes with secure, digital alternatives using distributed ledger technology (DLT), developed by the IOTA Foundation.”
