IOTAcore, the software that powers the IOTA 2.0 protocol, is on the verge of being released on a testnet for the first time, according to an IOTA expert. Although the full launch of IOTA 2.0 may still be a few months away, the community is eagerly awaiting its arrival. IOTA 2.0 is an upgrade that will bring improved consensus, transaction processing, decentralization, and security to the IOTA network. It will solidify IOTA’s position as a global leader in blockchain utility, with applications ranging from asset tokenization to decentralized identity. While IOTAcore is nearly ready for the testnet, it is just one component of the overall upgrade. The expert explains that IOTAcore is the node software that runs the protocol, but there are other improvements, such as an updated tokenomics model and a new VM, that make up the complete 2.0 upgrade. The GitHub repository for IOTA 2.0 shows that the only remaining task is defining the recommended node hardware. However, this doesn’t mean that the public testnet will be available in the near future. Once IOTAcore is completed, the developers will focus on integrating native assets, NFTs, Layer 2s, explorers, wallets, and SDKs into IOTA 2.0. These components are nearing completion, with Firefly and the SDK team making significant progress in resolving their respective issues. In conclusion, while the testnet is running internally, the infrastructure around IOTA 2.0 is still being built, making the second quarter of the year a challenging target for the full launch.
